How Has Station Usage Changed Across Japan?
This map displays passenger data from three different years:
- 2019 – Before the COVID-19 pandemic
- 2021 – A period when travel patterns changed dramatically
- 2023 – Showing how station usage has evolved since then
Some stations have gained passengers, while others have seen a decline.
The reasons vary from station to station and from region to region.
Rather than looking only at the numbers, compare stations that catch your interest and explore the remarkable reach of Japan’s railway network.
Why I Created This Map
Maps are fascinating because they inspire us to imagine different places, landscapes, and the stories behind them.
I wondered what would happen if I overlaid passenger data for stations across Japan onto a single map.
As I explored the completed map, I found myself making discoveries as well, such as realizing just how many people use certain stations every day.
As you explore the map, what places, landscapes, or stories does it inspire you to imagine?
