Kanto Region Station Ranking by Daily Passenger Entries and Exits | 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024

About the Kanto Region

The Kanto region lies in eastern Honshu and consists of one metropolis and six prefectures: Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo and Kanagawa.

Centered on Tokyo, large cities such as Yokohama, Saitama and Chiba spread across the region. It is not unusual for several railway companies to serve a single station or its surroundings.

Many people cross prefectural borders to commute or attend school, and the Shinkansen, conventional lines, subways, private railways and monorails all support travel in the region. So which stations in Kanto see the most passengers? You can also look up the rank of a station you know.

This page draws on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), National Land Numerical Information (Station Passenger Data) (国土数値情報(駅別乗降客数)) to present the Kanto rankings for 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

For rankings by prefecture, choose the button for Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo or Kanagawa. You can also pick any of the four years.

Stations that share a name but differ in railway operator or line are listed as separate entries.

What the Ranking Shows

In the Kanto region, No. 1 was Shinjuku (新宿) on the East Japan Railway Company (JR East, 東日本旅客鉄道) Chuo Line (中央線) in 2019, 2021 and 2023. In 2024 it was Shibuya (渋谷) on the Tokyu Corporation (東急電鉄) Toyoko Line (東横線).

Daily passenger entries and exits at Shinjuku were 1,578,732 in 2019, 1,044,356 in 2021 and 1,205,116 in 2023. Shibuya recorded 1,770,430 in 2024.

Counting the 2024 TOP50 by prefecture gives the following breakdown: Tokyo 38 stations, Kanagawa 6, Chiba 4 and Saitama 2. Tokyo accounts for 38 of the 50 stations (76%). Ibaraki, Tochigi and Gunma have no stations in the TOP50.

Your own country's capital or other large cities probably have heavily used stations as well. Compare them with Kanto’s busiest stations as you read the ranking.

Methodology and Notes

Each row in the ranking is a combination of station name, railway operator and line. Stations with the same name are not combined when the operator or line differs.

Ranks are calculated only for stations that have a positive passenger count recorded in the given year. The number of eligible Kanto stations was 1,975 in 2019, 1,914 in 2021, 1,915 in 2023 and 1,905 in 2024.

The 2023 data includes 86 stations recorded as 0 passengers. These are excluded from the ranking. Because the number of eligible stations varies by year, keep this in mind when comparing ranks across years.

Stations with identical passenger counts share the same rank, and the next rank is skipped.
