About Stations in Japan
Japan is a country where many people take the train to commute, go to school, shop and travel.
Large stations in Tokyo and Osaka are served by several railway companies and lines. Small stations in rural areas are just as essential, serving residents and visitors alike.
A station's role depends on where it is. Some handle Shinkansen (bullet train) services, some sit on big-city subways, and others belong to local lines. So which stations in Japan see the most passengers? You can also look up the rank of a station you know.
This page draws on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), National Land Numerical Information (Station Passenger Data) (国土数値情報(駅別乗降客数)) to present the national rankings for 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

What the Ranking Shows
Shinjuku (新宿) on the East Japan Railway Company (JR East, 東日本旅客鉄道) Chuo Line (中央線) ranked No. 1 in Japan in 2019, 2021 and 2023. In 2024, No. 1 was Shibuya (渋谷) on the Tokyu Corporation (東急電鉄) Toyoko Line (東横線).
Daily passenger entries and exits came to 1,578,732 at Shinjuku in 2019 and 1,770,430 at Shibuya in 2024.
The same three stations held the top three places in all four years: Shinjuku (JR East Chuo Line), Shibuya (Tokyu Toyoko Line) and Ikebukuro (池袋; JR East Yamanote Line, 山手線). In 2024 Shibuya moved ahead of Shinjuku, and the two swapped first and second place.

Methodology and Notes
Each row in the ranking is a combination of station name, railway operator and line. Stations with the same name are not combined when the operator or line differs.
Ranks are calculated only for entries that have a positive passenger count recorded in the given year. The number of eligible entries was 8,129 in 2019, 7,754 in 2021, 7,776 in 2023 and 7,739 in 2024.
The dataset holds 8,222 records nationwide. Entries with no recorded figure, and entries recorded as 0 passengers, are excluded; in 2023 there were 446 entries recorded as 0. Stations with identical passenger counts share the same rank, and the next rank is skipped.
