Chubu and Hokuriku Region Station Ranking by Daily Passenger Entries and Exits | 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024

About the Chubu and Hokuriku Region

This article treats six prefectures as the Chubu and Hokuriku region: Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, Gifu, Shizuoka and Aichi. Nagano, Yamanashi and Niigata are covered in the Koshinetsu article.

Daily life differs across the region. The Hokuriku side faces the Sea of Japan, Gifu is mountainous, and Shizuoka and Aichi lie on the Pacific side. Besides the metropolitan area centered on Nagoya, visitors also come for the mountains, the sea, hot springs and historic towns.

The Shinkansen and conventional lines connect the region with Tokyo and Osaka, and local railways support commuting, school and sightseeing trips. So which stations in Chubu and Hokuriku see the most passengers? You can also look up the rank of a station you know.

This page draws on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), National Land Numerical Information (Station Passenger Data) (国土数値情報(駅別乗降客数)) to present the Chubu and Hokuriku rankings for 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

What the Ranking Shows

In the Chubu and Hokuriku region, No. 1 was Nagoya (名古屋) on the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central, 東海旅客鉄道) Tokaido Main Line (東海道線) in 2019, 2023 and 2024. Only in 2021 was it Nagoya on Nagoya City (名古屋市) Line 1 (Higashiyama Line; 1号線東山線).

Your own country may have both a region with a major city and one ringed by mountains and sea. Keep stations from each in mind while you read the ranking for Chubu and Hokuriku.

Methodology and Notes

Each row in the ranking is a combination of station name, railway operator and line. Stations with the same name are not combined when the operator or line differs.

Ranks are calculated only for stations that have a positive passenger count recorded in the given year. The number of eligible Chubu and Hokuriku stations was 1,295 in 2019, 1,297 in 2021, 1,304 in 2023 and 1,292 in 2024.

The 2023 data includes 8 stations recorded as 0 passengers. These are excluded from the ranking. Because the number of eligible stations varies by year, keep this in mind when comparing ranks across years.

Stations with identical passenger counts share the same rank, and the next rank is skipped.
