Kyushu and Okinawa Region Station Ranking by Daily Passenger Entries and Exits | 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024

About the Kyushu and Okinawa Region

The Kyushu and Okinawa region consists of eight prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, Kagoshima and Okinawa.

Kyushu has large cities, volcanoes, hot spring areas and seaside towns. Southwest of Kyushu, the islands of Okinawa Prefecture stretch across the sea. They have a subtropical climate and a distinctive culture.

In Kyushu, the Shinkansen, conventional lines, subways and private railways serve commuters and travelers. On the main island of Okinawa, the Yui Rail (ゆいレール) monorail links central Naha with the airport.

So which stations in Kyushu and Okinawa see the most passengers? You can also look up the rank of a station you know.

This page draws on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), National Land Numerical Information (Station Passenger Data) (国土数値情報(駅別乗降客数)) to present the Kyushu and Okinawa rankings for 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

What the Ranking Shows

In the Kyushu and Okinawa region, No. 1 was Hakata (博多) on the Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu, 九州旅客鉄道) Kagoshima Main Line (鹿児島線) in 2019, 2023 and 2024. In 2021 it was Hakata on Fukuoka City (福岡市) Line 1 (Airport Line; 1号線(空港線)).

Daily passenger entries and exits at Hakata on the JR Kyushu Kagoshima Main Line were 253,252 in 2019, 93,823 in 2021, 216,766 in 2023 and 250,924 in 2024. In 2021, Hakata on Fukuoka City Line 1 (Airport Line) was higher at 105,210.

Among the 53 stations that were in the Kyushu and Okinawa TOP50 in 2019 or 2024 and have figures for both years, Ropponmatsu recorded the largest rise in rank (六本松) on Fukuoka City Line 3 (Nanakuma Line; 3号線(七隈線)). It rose 21 places, from 58th to 37th. Its daily passenger entries and exits were 14,228 in 2019 and 20,230 in 2024.

Your own country may have islands far from the mainland, or subways running through a big city. Compare them with Kyushu and Okinawa as you read the ranking.

Methodology and Notes

Each row in the ranking is a combination of station name, railway operator and line. Stations with the same name are not combined when the operator or line differs.

Ranks are calculated only for stations that have a positive passenger count recorded in the given year. The number of eligible Kyushu and Okinawa stations was 770 in 2019, 767 in 2021, 769 in 2023 and 775 in 2024.

The 2023 data includes 24 stations recorded as 0 passengers. These are excluded from the ranking. Because the number of eligible stations varies by year, keep this in mind when comparing ranks across years.

Stations with identical passenger counts share the same rank, and the next rank is skipped.
