The locations and passenger volumes of airports vary greatly from one country and region to another.
Some airports in Japan may resemble those in your country, while others may be completely different.
Using data from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, we mapped passenger traffic at airports across Japan.

Around 319 Million Passenger Movements Across Japan in 2024
Airports across Japan recorded 318,735,951 passenger movements in 2024.
This is not a count of unique individuals. It is an annual total of arriving and departing passengers, so a round trip is counted twice and frequent travelers are counted each time they use an airport.
Zoom in on the map and compare individual airports as well as the nationwide total.
What I Noticed While Creating the Map
The first thing that caught my attention was the scale of passenger traffic at Haneda and Narita airports near Tokyo.
Other airports near major cities such as Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo and Fukuoka also handle large numbers of passengers.
Along Japan’s coast and across its islands, meanwhile, airports of many different sizes are scattered across the map.
Looking more closely, I also noticed that some prefectures do not appear to have an airport.
