Shikoku Region Station Ranking by Daily Passenger Entries and Exits | 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024

About the Shikoku Region

Shikoku is one of Japan's four main islands and consists of four prefectures: Tokushima, Kagawa, Ehime and Kochi.

The island is surrounded by the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean, with mountains spreading through its center. Cities such as Takamatsu and Matsuyama are joined by towns scattered along the coast and in the mountain valleys.

JR lines, private railways and streetcars (trams) run here. They serve commuters and students, and also travelers visiting hot springs, temples and natural scenery.

So which stations in Shikoku see the most passengers? You can also look up the rank of a station you know.

This page draws on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), National Land Numerical Information (Station Passenger Data) (国土数値情報(駅別乗降客数)) to present the Shikoku rankings for 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

For prefectural rankings, choose the button for Tokushima, Kagawa, Ehime or Kochi. You can also pick any of the four years.

Stations that share a name but differ in railway operator or line are listed as separate entries.

What the Ranking Shows

Takamatsu (高松) on the Shikoku Railway Company (JR Shikoku, 四国旅客鉄道) Yosan Line (予讃線) had the most daily passenger entries and exits in Shikoku in all four years.

The daily figures were 25,952 in 2019, 18,946 in 2021, 21,850 in 2023 and 25,578 in 2024. They fell in 2021 and recovered in 2023 and 2024, but the 2024 figure has not returned to the 2019 level.

Among the 51 stations that were in the Shikoku TOP50 in 2019 or 2024 and have figures for both years, Fukuonji recorded the largest rise in rank (福音寺) on the Iyo Railway (Iyotetsu, 伊予鉄道) Yokogawara Line (横河原線). It rose 17 places, from 63rd to 46th. Its daily passenger entries and exits were 1,698 in 2019 and 1,774 in 2024.

An island region or a city with streetcars may be part of your own country as well. Compare those places with Shikoku as you read the ranking.

Methodology and Notes

Each row in the ranking is a combination of station name, railway operator and line. Stations with the same name are not combined when the operator or line differs.

Ranks are calculated only for stations that have a positive passenger count recorded in the given year. The number of eligible Shikoku stations was 491 in 2019, 490 in 2021, 490 in 2023 and 487 in 2024.

The 2023 data includes 6 stations recorded as 0 passengers. These are excluded from the ranking. Because the number of eligible stations varies by year, keep this in mind when comparing ranks across years.

Stations with identical passenger counts share the same rank, and the next rank is skipped.
