About the Koshinetsu Region
The Koshinetsu region groups together three prefectures: Niigata, Yamanashi and Nagano.
Climate and terrain differ greatly among Niigata on the Sea of Japan, Yamanashi with its view of Mt. Fuji and its lakes, and mountain-ringed Nagano. Many places have deep snow, and visitors from Japan and abroad come for the highlands, hot springs and ski resorts.
Shinkansen and limited express trains connect the region with Tokyo. Within it, intercity lines and railways running through mountain valleys support commuting, school trips and sightseeing.
So which stations in Koshinetsu see the most passengers? You can also look up the rank of a station you know.
This page draws on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), National Land Numerical Information (Station Passenger Data) (国土数値情報(駅別乗降客数)) to present the Koshinetsu rankings for 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024.

What the Ranking Shows
Niigata (新潟) on the East Japan Railway Company (JR East, 東日本旅客鉄道) Shinetsu Main Line (信越線) had the most daily passenger entries and exits in Koshinetsu in all four years.
The daily figures were 74,944 in 2019, 52,554 in 2021, 59,538 in 2023 and 70,902 in 2024. They fell in 2021 and recovered in 2023 and 2024, but the 2024 figure has not returned to the 2019 level.
Among the 48 stations that were in the Koshinetsu TOP50 in 2019 or 2024 and have figures for both years, Kawaguchiko recorded the largest rise in rank (河口湖) on the Fujisan-roku Electric Railway (富士山麓電気鉄道) Kawaguchiko Line (河口湖線). It rose 36 places, from 62nd to 26th. Its daily passenger entries and exits were 3,172 in 2019 and 5,148 in 2024.
Mountains, lakes and snowy resort areas may be part of your own country's landscape too. Compare the railways serving them with Koshinetsu's as you read the ranking.

Methodology and Notes
Each row in the ranking is a combination of station name, railway operator and line. Stations with the same name are not combined when the operator or line differs.
Ranks are calculated only for stations that have a positive passenger count recorded in the given year. The number of eligible Koshinetsu stations was 373 in 2019, 268 in 2021, 279 in 2023 and 275 in 2024.
The 2023 data includes 98 stations recorded as 0 passengers. These are excluded from the ranking. Because the number of eligible stations varies by year, keep this in mind when comparing ranks across years.
Stations with identical passenger counts share the same rank, and the next rank is skipped.
